A distinct northern terroir

Chablis lies in the Yonne, well north of the Côte d'Or, on Kimmeridgian limestone that gives its wines their characteristic tension and minerality. It produces only chardonnay, across a hierarchy from Petit Chablis and village Chablis up through Premier Cru to a small, closely held tier of Grands Crus on a single celebrated slope above the town.

Why it is being re-rated

Two shifts have lifted Chablis. Quality perception has risen as producers have refined their work and the wines have gained international recognition; and demand for fine white Burgundy, against very limited supply on the Côte d'Or, has pushed attention outward. Chablis, offering serious chardonnay at more accessible prices, has been a natural beneficiary.

What is available — and what is not

The Grands Crus of Chablis are confidential and rarely trade; access there is as constrained as anywhere in Burgundy. Premier Cru and village Chablis are more approachable, both in price and in availability, and are where most acquisition opportunities arise. As across Burgundy, holdings can be fragmented across several small parcels.

Points to weigh

Confirm the exact appellation tier and climat, exposure (decisive in a cool northern site), vine age and any lease. Frost is a real hazard in Chablis and worth understanding for any parcel.
