Philippe Petit — biographies

Short form. Philippe Petit, founder of VITACEAE, an independent advisory firm for off-market premium vineyard transactions. Oenologist, tenth generation of a Champagne winegrowing family. vitaceae.fr

Full form. Founder of VITACEAE. Tenth generation of a Champagne winegrowing family. Trained as an oenologist, holder of an MBA. Former sworn wine broker in Champagne, with operational experience acquired within Champagne houses. Honorary judge of the commercial court. More than twenty-five years observing the vineyard and its transactions. He founded VITACEAE to bring to the premium vineyard market an approach combining two readings rarely held together: that of the asset — soil, grape varieties, cru classification, production facilities, stocks — and that of the financial transaction which transfers it. The firm operates off-market only, and provides no regulated advice.

Editorial angles

Six angles on which the firm can contribute field evidence, anonymised cases and a reasoned reading. Each angle is documented from cited and dated institutional sources.

  1. The market you cannot see. The share of premium vineyard transactions conducted without advertising, and what that says about the real transparency of the land market.
  2. The decade of transmission. The age pyramid of operators, family successions that fail to complete, the entry of outside capital: what demography imposes on the vineyard.
  3. What actually blocks a sale. Running farm leases, joint ownership, corporate structures, pre-emption rights: the feasibility factors that price does not reveal.
  4. Why an estate is not real estate. Why value rests on cru classification, plant health, production facilities and stocks — and why a property grid fails to capture it.
  5. Champagne and Burgundy: two markets, two logics. Ownership structures, the relationship with the négoce, the hierarchy of crus: what concretely separates the two vineyards for a buyer.
  6. The role of advisers in a vineyard transaction. How the notary, the chartered accountant, the wealth manager and the intermediary fit together — and where the line runs between them.

“An average is not a price, and the gap between the two is precisely where value is decided.”

Resources for newsrooms

The firm publishes a freely accessible observatory of vineyard land data, fully sourced and dated. It is designed to be cited: every series carries its source, its date and a stable address, and each page states how to cite it.

  • Price benchmarks — Champagne by sub-appellation and Burgundy by appellation level, series from 1991, comparison with other asset classes, methodology and sources.
  • Annual benchmarks — yields and reserve management in Champagne, farm rent schedules department by department, demography and transmission, glossary.
  • The industry behind the hectare — the economics of the Champagne and Burgundy value chains.
