Côte de Nuits vs Côte de Beaune: Two Markets

The Côte d'Or is two markets: a Côte de Nuits vineyard (pinot noir) and the Côte de Beaune differ in grape, wine and where value concentrates. The Côte de Nuits to the north and the Côte de Beaune to the south differ in grape, in the wines that define them, and in where their value concentrates. For a buyer, knowing which is which is the start of any Burgundy strategy.

Côte de Nuits — the red-wine summit

Running south from Dijon through Gevrey-Chambertin, Vosne-Romanée and Nuits-Saint-Georges, the Côte de Nuits is pinot noir country and home to the most valuable red-wine climats on earth. Its Grands Crus — the names at the very peak of the global fine-wine market — set price levels that scarcity, not surface, dictates. Availability is extraordinarily rare; parcels move privately, if at all.

Côte de Beaune — whites at the top, breadth below

South of the Côte de Nuits, the Côte de Beaune grows both colours but is celebrated above all for its whites: the great chardonnay climats of Puligny-Montrachet, Chassagne-Montrachet and Meursault rank among the world's most valuable white-wine land. Alongside the summit, the Côte de Beaune offers greater breadth of village and Premier Cru opportunity than the Côte de Nuits.

Two logics for a buyer

• Seeking the pinnacle of red Burgundy? The Côte de Nuits — accepting that access is the binding constraint and patience is mandatory.
• Seeking great white Burgundy, or more available village and Premier Cru entry? The Côte de Beaune offers both the white summit and more breadth beneath it.

Shared realities

Both are scarcity markets of fragmented, closely held climats, sourced off-market, within the same rural land regime (SAFER, control of structures, Loi Sempastous). In both, an average price means little; the specific climat and parcel are everything.
